A descendant of the Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians, Proudfit is the founding director of the California Indian Culture and Sovereignty Center at Cal State San Marcos. In 2016, she was appointed by President Barack Obama to the National Advisory Council on Indian Education. She owns Native Media Strategies, a company dedicated to promoting American Indian representation in the film, TV and media industries. She earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Cal State Long Beach and a master’s and doctorate in political science with an emphasis in public policy and American Indian studies from Northern Arizona University.
